Position Announcement: Ecosystem Management (EMI) Field Botanist/Biologist Positions

Ecosystem Management (EMI) is hiring five field botanists/biologists to conduct vegetation sampling on Navajo Nation June–August (maybe some of Sep.). Work, which would start June 6, mainly includes sampling plant biomass production using the double sampling (estimating and harvesting) method across northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico.

Work will involve lots of camping, driving, and hiking alone on the Fort Defiance Plateau, Chuska Mountains, and west of the Chuskas around Chinle, AZ (Gallup, NM, is nearest large town). Work vehicles will be provided. No housing is provided as all work involves camping. The work schedule will be ten days on four off.

Requirements include excellent plant identification skills (including grasses), familiarity with Southwest flora, navigation skills, physical endurance, and willingness to work and camp alone. Access to many of the sites will require long hikes through mountainous terrain.

We are hiring four field botanists and one field botanist/crew leader. Crew leader duties include coordinating logistics, site scheduling, data management, communicating with local BIA offices and EMI in Albuquerque, etc. Pay is $1,200 per 10-day session and $35 per diem for each night of camping.

Please email resume, references, brief letter of interest, and any questions to Matt Brooks at
